Laytonsville Construction Project Underway

A $4.2 million project set in Laytonsville is currently underway. Construction equipment and a number of workers have begun to occupy the space of an expected year-long project intended to create 25 acres of land across Great Seneca Creek, which flows under Woodfield Road in Laytonsville. Developers of the upcoming project say that Laytonsville residents can expect to see various trucks and several different kinds of earth moving equipment along the bridge near Great Seneca Creek, though traffic disruption across Woodfield Road is not expected.

“We are just starting that process and it should take about a year or a year and a half,” said Rob Shreeve, who currently oversees the large project for the State Highway Administration.

The development plan includes the construction of 25 acres of forested wetlands as well as the maintenance and fortifying of about 1,000 feet of Great Seneca Creek. The Great Seneca Creek land site borders the parkland to the west of the site owned by the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission.

Plans have also been set in place to finish an additional $4.5 million project along Goshen Creek, located further south and west of Woodfield Road off Brick and Huntmaster roads. The project has so far created 15 acres of wetlands and is almost completed, according Shreeve.

“We have seeded a lot of different grasses, trees and shrubs,” he said. “We see what comes in over the first year, and then we plant other species that will supplement them.”

Plenty of work went in to the project—some tasks included restoring the stream, grading the dried out floodplain and creating forested wet lands and small vernal pools, which support local frogs and salamanders. Facchina Construction of La Plata received $2.6 million to complete the $4.5 million project.
